Created by Stephen 6 years ago
Sri Lanka’s legend and a great human being who followed the vision of Leonard Cheshire until his last breathe served disabled people of his country for more than 41 years inspired many generation including people of neighbouring countries like Pakistan. He inspired many people of his generation also inspired two brothers from Pakistan i.e Sabastian Javed and Stephen Anjum. In 1996 with the encouragement of Dennis Cooray Stephen & Sabastian started Leonard Cheshire service in Pakistan. Before departing forever, he visited Pakistan in August 2007 alongwith his Mrs.Sisila Dennis and inauguarated Daycare Centre. I compiled report of that time in Aug 2007 and sent to many people. Enjoy reading this report.

Dear Friends: We are pleased to say that Chairman of ‘The Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire Home’ Sri Lanka ‘Mr. Dennis Cooray and Mrs. Sisila Dennis Cooray’ visited Pakistan from 12-19th August 2007 and visited ‘Tamir Cheshire Community Programme’ for disabled people. On 13th August 2007, Mr. Dennis Cooray inaugurated the a Day Care Center’ for Differently Abled People in Faisalabad. Board of Management, Staff and Community people highly welcomed Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Cooray in Faisalabad, Pakistan. More than 500 Community people and disabled families attended this programme. Disabled Children played welcome songs and presented different tableau. Board members of TCCP made speeches and highly appreciate Mr. & Mrs Dennis Cooray for his long carrier of social service almost 41 years. Mr. Stephen Anjum President of Tamir Welfare Organisation was greatly impressed by the service of ‘Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire Home’ providing residential care for disabled people, where this couple was serving disabled people with love and care.

How the Cheshire Service started in Pakistan was published in a ‘Bulletin of SJLPCH Sri Lanka on January 2005. Below is the some quote of Bulletin:
“The story originates in the 1994 when Sabastian Javed, brother of Stephen Anjum from Pakistan, visited SJLPCH with a group of volunteers from the USA. The group happily integrated with the residents in the Workshop activities during their attachment and also familiarised themselves with the general functioning of this Home for the Differently Abled. They had discussions with the Chairman, back home in Pakistan, Sabastian informed Stephen that he was greatly taken up with the SJLPCH. This led to Stephen, who was most impressed with what his brother related, communicating with the Home. LCI, London was immediately informed about Stephen’s inquiry and he was advised accordingly. Thereupon, LCI sent Alice Bradley, a Staff Consultant, to Pakistan for exploratory discussion and she was very impressed with the dedication and commitment of Stephen Anjum & his wife Thomsena Anjum, So this was the beginning of an enterprise, which is today involved in multi-faceted activities of 'Tamir Welfare Organization' now partner organization of Leonard Cheshire International in Pakistan”

Mr. Dennis Cooray gave wonderful message on this occasion. He said,
Good Evening Ladies and Gentleman: This the most memorable days of my life! Truly, it will remain in my memory and in the history of the Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire Home, Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka as a red latter day. In fact, my reading of this very great honour accorded to me by my good friend, Stephen Anjum, President of the Tamir Cheshire Community Programme, Thomsena, his tremendously supportive wife and the Board of Management in naming the Day Care Center after me is that at eventide the God above is bestowing a blessing – a sign of appreciation for my endeavors over the past forty one years. So, I am sure you can imagine my feelings when I express these words. It has really and truly warmed the cockles of my heart. It is not intended to address this distinguished gathering at length. The early history of the Tamir Cheshire Community programme has been chronicled in a bulletin issued by the Bard of Management of the Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire home in January 2005. There has been rapid and extensive development since. The driving force that has fashioned what has presently emerged as a worldwide organization and brought about its remarkable success is Stephen Anjum and on this memorable occasion. I would like to pay him a warm tribute for this tremendous achievement.

And, finally, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is abundantly clear to me that the ‘Tamir-Cheshire Community Programme’ in Pakistan and ‘Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire Home’ in Sri Lanka have been motivated by a common impulse. Namely, to portray the vision of Leonard Cheshire (LC as he was affectionately known). It is, however, for others to decide whether we have realized our objectives in adopting this stance. Personally, it was a very rare privilege for me to have been well acquainted with the Founder of Cheshire Homes and Service around the globe and have greatly benefited from the guidance of this great humanitarian for 26 years. Indeed, it was very rich experience. And now, standing on Pakistan Soil, I would like to add, if I may, a few more thoughts. I have already mentioned the vision of Leonard Cheshire. Therefore, I would like to assure you all that your new venture is in accord with the ideals of Leonard Cheshire. May you all be greatly blessed and may your endeavors meet with more and more success in the coming days. This is my prayer for you. Thank you all again very much for inviting me and Mrs. Cooray. We do very much appreciate the honour. Dennis Cooray SJLPCH, Sri Lanka.
