Leonard awarded the Victoria Cross

1944 September

Created by Leonard Cheshire 6 years ago

Having completed 100 missions and been awarded a second bar to his DSO, Leonard was taken off operations in July 1944 and in September 1944 - two days after his 27 birthday - awarded the Victoria Cross, not for any single act of bravery, but for four years of sustained courage. This award made him the most decorated RAF officer of WW II – a VC, 3 DSOs, a DFC.
